Encouraging Prayer

James Banks

James Banks is a best-selling author and speaker best known for his work helping others learn how to pray. He and his wife Cari have been married over 28 years and have two adult children. They make their home in Durham, North Carolina, where James serves as a pastor, church-planter and part-time seminary professor.  James is also the author of several magazine articles on prayer and outreach and is a regular guest on radio and television.

James grew up in the San Diego area.  He started writing in elementary school when his 4th grade teacher heard him making up poetry spontaneously and gave him topics to write about (probably to make him sit still). His senior year in high school James was the California State Champion in Informative Speaking; his senior year in college he ranked among the top four speakers in the U.S.A. in the same event.  Today, in addition to writing and speaking, James enjoys college basketball, making his own diesel fuel (just ask him), beekeeping, fencing, gardening, and spending time under the hood of his 1964 Plymouth. James also loves church history, forgotten hymns and languages (after high school he was a foreign exchange student in Germany). He is fluent in both German and Spanish.

James is a graduate of Westmont College (B.A.), Princeton Theological Seminary (Master of Divinity), and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (Doctor of Ministry, emphasis in Church History). He is ordained in the Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC), a growing, Christ-centered group of believers.

James loves to help others draw near to God through prayer. Nearly 25 years in pastoral ministry and his experience as a parent enable him to speak from the heart about challenges many face and God’s amazing power to answer prayer. He is available for speaking events, seminars and retreats. For more information and clips from recent media appearances, please visit the Events/Media page of his website.

The Lost Art of Praying Together

The Lost Art Of Praying Together

Jesus has promised that “where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them” (Matthew 18:20). Praying together is an opportunity to enter into the presence of God in a unique and powerful way. But for many, praying together has become a lost art. Prayer meetings aren’t at the top of most Christians’ lists of favorite things to do.

Filled with biblical encouragement and practical insights, The Lost Art of Praying Together will help you make united prayer a priority—in your church, your family, and wherever God’s people are gathered together. Reflection questions make this book ideal for personal or group study, and appendices offer practical tips for organizing prayer groups. Amazing things happen when God’s people pray!
